UPDATE; As expected the state Senate defeated the gay marriage bill by a tally of 14-20. There were 37 senators present at the start of session; that means 3 senators chose not to vote.
Will post a list of the vote as soon as it is available -- it will be interesting to see who voted yes, who voted no, and who bailed ....
UPDATED 5:21 p.m. OK, now this is really interesting. Of the three abstentions, according to the Star Ledger, one was the incoming Senate President Steve Sweeney. Makes one wonder if he really wanted to vote no.
The other two abstentions: Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Bergen, who had voted no on the judiciary committee, but abstained today, and Sen. James Beach, D-Camden.
Sen. Andrew Ciesla, R-Ocean, who had supported the civil unions law in the past and was targeted by supporters as another potential yes vote, did not attend today's session.
UPDATED: 5:38 p.m. Star Ledger has vote tally. Six Democrats: Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-Cape May) Sen. Ronald L. Rice (D- Essex), Sen. John A. Girgenti (D-Passaic), Sen. Nicholas Sacco (D-Hudson) . Sen. Fred H. Madden (D-Gloucester), and Sen. Shirley K. Turner (D-Mercer) voted no. Only Republican to vote yes was Sen. Bill Baroni, D-Mercer.
Surprises? That Sweeney and Sarlo abstained ...
The Senate debate on gay marriage has begun.
(UPDATE) NJN has a much better link here.
You can watch it over the Internet by linking here; click on the link for the Senate session.
Based on the tone and tenor of Sen. Loretta Weinberg's remarks so far, it sounds as if the sponsor knows the bill doesn't have the votes -- she just said, "It's a struggle I expect will have to continue."
